'Without major pieces... 19.09.2009 – ...there wouldn't be any weak back ranks,' says an old German chess wisdom which once again hits the mark in the following position, where Black added fuel to the fire with 33...e3. How would you assess the situation now? A) White achieves victory by deflecting the black queen with 34.a4; B) advantageous is the rook swap on e8 followed by 35.Qxb6 (despite the rejoinder 35...exf2); C) the position is dynamically balanced. The solution is here, but first ponder over it with a larger version of the diagram

Ez meg a legnagyobb:
The world's biggest chess game – possibly by far 29.08.2009 – The chess board is 1200 x 1200 feet in size, with squares measuring 150 feet and pieces 30 to 60 feet in size. The best place to view the action is from the Kyffhäuser Monument in Thuringia, Germany, from an elevation of 1500 feet. The opponents are IM Elisabeth Pähtz, Germany's top female player, and an Internet community that votes every morning at 10 a.m. on their move. You can join in.

Breakthrough performance by Pocket Fritz 4 in Buenos Aires
27.08.2009 – The Mercosur Cup in Argentina is unusual since it is one of the few remaining chess tournaments where a computer is allowed to compete. Not a full quad or oct monster, but the handheld Pocket PC. Last year Pocket Fritz 3 won comfortably, and this year it was Pocket Fritz 4 based on the new Hiarcs 13.0 engine. You don't want to know what the program did in Buenos Aires. Or do you?
Pocket Fritz 4 in the Mercosur Cup 2009
The global launch of Pocket Fritz 4, based on the Hiarcs 13.0 chess engine, could not have been more auspicious. In this category seven tournament the program, running on a handheld Pocket PC, scored a stunning 9.5/10 points, with an Elo performance of 2938. The program is scheduled to be released in October 2009 – but you can order Pocket Fritz 3.0 for €49.99 today. : http://chessbase.com/newsdetail.asp?newsid=5719
